Trailer Talk: Upcoming summer 2012 releases

Entertainment Weekly‘s movie seasonal preview issues are my favorite ones, and it probably helps that there seem to be a fair amount of movies worth watching this summer…at least, they appear to be worth watching, in my opinion.  I’ve decided to organize this post a little differently this time, though I will still be only focusing on the movies that interest me the most.

Releasing May 4th:

Title: The Avengers
Summary:
Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki & his army.

This is one of those hugely hyped movies, and of course I like a lot of the cast, which is my main reason for wanting to see this film.  Here’s to hoping Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth’s acting in their respective roles has improved, and maybe we’ll see a little more development if Chris Evans’ Captain America.  I’m sure Robert Downing Jr. will give a solid performance.

Title:
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Summary:
British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than its advertisements, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways.

I think this is a 2011 limited release that’s releasing wide in May.  Whatever the case is, I wanted to see it then, I still want to see it now.  It looks like a relaxing watch.

Releasing May 25th:

Title:
Men in Black 3
Summary:
Agent J travels in time to MIB’s early years in the 1960s, to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history.

This just looks completely hilarious and I’m totally looking forward to seeing Josh Brolin as a young Tommy Lee Jones.  From the looks of the trailer, I don’t think I’m going to be disappointed.

Releasing June 15th:

Title:
Rock of Ages
Summary:
Set in 1987 Los Angeles, Drew and Sherrie are two young people chasing their dreams in the big city. When they meet, it’s love at first sight, though their romance will face a series of challenges.

Okay so I’ve given up all hope we’re ever going to see another Grease (1978) or any other successful musicals-turned-film from back in the day.  However, I’m willing to give this one a shot, just for the sake of it.  At least this time I’ll walk in knowing that it’s a musical.  I remember being extremely confused as to why people were randomly bursting out into song during Dreamgirls (2006) and Sweeny Todd (2007).  Hahaha.  I had been dragged to those movies by friends and was never told they were musicals.  (And for Sweeny Todd, I ended up just walking out after twenty minutes because it was so bloody and gross that I just couldn’t take it.  I had no problems waiting for my friends to finish the movie.)

Releasing June 22nd:

Title: Brave
Summary:
Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

Comparisons have been made that this is an animated parallel to The Hunger Games series.  Anyway, I like watching animations and this one looks like it’s going to be all right.  What I’m really looking forward to is Rise of the Guardians (2012), though.

Title: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Summary:
As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan.

This quite honestly seems very hilarious.  Not only do I not believe the world is ending this year, I can only imagine that we’re going to look back at all the “doomsday” movies of/centered around 2012, and laugh.  (Perhaps some of us will chuckle weakly for having believed it, just like the time we thought the world was going to end with Y2K, or that other doomsday prophecy that was so forgettable to me I can’t even remember what it was off the top of my head, only that there had been a ton of buzz about it at the time.)

Releasing June 29th:

Title: Magic Mike (no trailer available that I could find)
Summary:
An upstart male stripper is taken under the wing of a more experienced colleagues.

Ummm…yup.  That’s the summary IMDB gives.  Why do I want to see this?  No, not for the male stripper aspect, though I don’t think I really have any complains about seeing Channing Tatum and Adam Rodriguez shirtless.  What I’m really curious about is why in the world Adam Rodriguez decided to do this movie instead of The Dark Knight Rises with Christopher Nolan.  And as much as I love Adam, I just don’t think he made the right call…but of course I’ve been wrong before.

Title: People Like Us
Summary:
A man is tasked with delivering $150,000 of his deceased father’s fortune to the sister he has never met.

Um…so apparently the “sister” develops romantic feelings for her “brother,” at some point.  I wonder how they’re going to work that out without it being super awkward.  Aside from that, really looking forward to seeing this mostly because some of my favorite actors are in it—I love Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pine, and Olivia Wilde.  🙂

Releasing July 3rd:

Title: The Amazing Spider-Man
Summary:
Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner.

This could either be really good or really bad.  I was extremely skeptical at first, when I heard they were remaking Spider-Man…again.  After watching a few of the trailers though, this looks like it might be as good (or possibly even better) than the ones Tobey Maguire was in.

Releasing July 13th:

Title: Ice Age: Continental Drift
Summary:
Manny, Diego, and Sid embark upon another adventure after their continent is set adrift. Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world.

I know.  They need to stop making this and Madagascar sequels already.  And yet…I can’t help but be intrigued.  Hahaha.

Title: Ted
Summary:
A story centered on a man and his teddy bear, who comes to life as the result of a childhood wish.

This just looks incredibly funny.  It’s also crazy how it seems the world just seems to accept that a talking bear exists.

Releasing July 20th:

Title: The Dark Knight Rises
Summary:
Eight years after Batman took the fall for Two Face’s crimes, a new terrorist leader, Bane overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that brands him an enemy.

Why is Bane evil?  Who cares!  Just kidding…well, sort of.  I’d be lying if I said I was watching this for anything other than the eye candy, so I’m not even going to hide it.  Also, I love just about anything Christopher Nolan touches.  I swear that man has the touch of Midas when it comes to movies.

Releasing August 3rd:

Title: The Bourne Legacy
Summary:
A story centered on a new CIA operative in the universe based on Robert Ludlum’s novels.

Jeremy Renner is finally getting the recognition I think he deserves.  I look forward to seeing him in this spin-off of the Bourne franchise.

Releasing August 24th:

Title: Premium Rush
Summary:
In Manhattan, a bike messenger picks up an envelope that attracts the interest of a dirty cop, who pursues the cyclist throughout the city.

I think I like just about everything JGL is in.  If Chris Nolan has the Midas touch for filmmaking, JGL certainly has it for acting.  This guy always gives solid performances and I’m really looking forward to seeing him in this one.  He’s just an incredibly charming actor.

Of course, I realize my taste doesn’t completely align with the rest of the world.  There’s plenty of other upcoming summer releases that I haven’t mentioned because I have no interest in seeing them, or perhaps they’re lesser known films that I haven’t quite uncovered yet, all of which may very well be looking into.  This post is only meant to reflect my personal tastes.

Anyway, hope you all enjoyed these trailers, and see you all again next time!  😀

  1. I am not sure if I could pick just one. Dark Knight Rises, Avengers, Prometheus, Moonrise Kingdom, Ted, Brave, Spiderman, I want to see them all and probably will.

    • Haha. This post only contains e movies I’m interested in seeing. While Prometheus looks interesting, I don’t think I’d ever actually watch it. I don’t like anything gory or horror related.
